Read This, It will Change Your Life: With Dr. Leila Kamali

Our racialised attitudes are learned and conditioned. In our anti-racist work, we need to be reading and engaging with culture--history, novels, poetry, and the arts. This is how we build understanding and empathy, helping us identify with others.

  • Wondering where to start with your anti-racist self-education?

  • Leila developed this learning session from her research specialisms in Black literature and history in British and American contexts.

  • Don't worry, Leila has lots of experience of leading university students through massive reading lists for their degrees, and she is super excited to chat with you about readings specially selected for this session.

  • You need no prior expertise and do not need to read ahead of time!

  • This 90-Minute workshop will be live, and the recording will be yours to keep

About Dr. Leila Kamali

Dr. Leila Kamali is an academic with over 20 years' experience in the field of literature and race, and has been a yoga teacher for the past 10 years. She joins us here in the School in the spirit of pure delight in being able to share some small but very important snippets from global literature on the subject of racism. Don't worry, she has lots of experience of leading university students through massive reading lists for their degrees, and she is super excited to chat with you about these readings, for which you need no prior expertise! Leila is the author of The Cultural Memory of Africa in African American and Black British Fiction, 1970-2000 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016), and her articles have been published in Callaloo, Obsidian and Atlantic Studies. She is currently planning a major film and education project relating to John Edgar Wideman’s work.

Why are literature and art important in this movement?

Every time you read a beautiful poem, or see a remarkable painting, you can trace the relationship between your freedom and the freedom of everyone else on the planet.
